JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Senior Medical Officer, this position is responsible for running all laboratory tests as provided at the Clinic.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform laboratory tests following written SOP.
- Transcribes patient and QC results to appropriate reports and/or result logs.
- Maintain routine laboratory Quality Control and Patient Specimen logs.
- Initiate corrective action for patient and QC results and reports these incidences to Senior Medical Officer.
- Monitor established levels of supplies and inventory, to include, but not limited to instrument reagents and QC materials.
- Operate and provide preventive maintenance for automated and manual lab equipment.
- Recognize instrument and/or assay failures, and perform basic instrument troubleshooting.
- Participate in instrument calibration.
- Participate in scheduled and unscheduled proficiency testing, to include, but not limited to, external regulatory and internal blind samples.
- Perform follow-up corrective action as needed, and reports findings to Senior Medical Officer
- Uphold effective communication with laboratory and site personnel, to include, but not limited to nursing staff, lab management, and other departments within the facility.
- Participate in regular team meetings.
- Maintain and update laboratory supplies and update Senior Medical Officer on stock Levels.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Senior Medical Officer
WORKING CONDITIONS
The post holder will spend most of the working hours in the laboratory, a prohibited area for non-laboratory staff. He/she will be exposed to different diseases and infections and will be required to receive vaccines as necessary to prevent infections. Occasionally, she/he will be required to work odd hours to attend to emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma in Laboratory technology
- Registration with Medical Council of Malawi
- Minimum 2 years experience at a busy hospital equipped with a laboratory with comprehensive tests.
- Experience with handling and running tests on a haematology machine, chemistry analysers, Point of care diagnostic tests, Microscopy and rapid antibody tests.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
- In-depth understanding of QC controls, quantitative and qualitative assays
- Knowledge of regulatory compliances and agencies, as determined by site protocols
- ability to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in compliance with established regulatory agencies and vendor recommendations
- Good knowledge of lab techniques relating to quantitative and qualitative testing procedures
- Expertise with specimen collection and rejection criteria
- Knowledge of international shipping regulations for site specimen transportation
- Excellent computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Power Point.
- Strong organizational and priotizing skills.
- Aptitude for prioritizing workflow, including both routine and STAT specimens.
- Ability to focus on details under stressful conditions
